Poochie....

I found a list of the worlds most famous dogs (in pop culture). Have a look for yourselves. What I found amazing was that there were 2 Simpson's dogs listed, Santa's little helper and the ill fated character Poochie. What's ridiculous is that Poochie comes in 22 places ahead of SLH in the rankings. What craps is this?

Most of the other dogs are recognizable, but there are some unknown to me. I can't argue with number 1, 2, 3 or 4 but is Goofy really a dog? Surely that is cause for great debate. Also, how does Underdog rate ahead of Hong Kong Phooey? Oh, and the inclusion of Junkyard dog, rates up there with the inclusion of Makybe Diva in the Ralph top 200 poll recently published.

Have a good week.

Poochie was such a one show wonder, he should have been forgotten by all and sundry.
Goofy, is half man, half beast, in a vest. Not very doggy.

Goofy is a dog??

I never knew that.

I don't really ever thought of him as a particular species... he's just Goofy.

I'm impressed UBU made it on to the list though.

Although Hong Kong Phooey should have rated higher. After all, he's a kickass dog.

No Dougal from the Magic Roundabout, and the Littlest Hobo placed too far back in the list.

Still, hardly a global sample, is it? No Bouncer from the Mangle household on good old Ramsay Street?

Goofy is a dog - there is no debate about it at all. His original name was Dippy Dawg, but 'Dippy' was too close to 'Donald' (Duck), so it was changed to the nickname the animators had given him around the studio ("that goofy dog"), and they dropped the 'Dawg' part to keep it snappy - and because the illiteration no longer applied.

If the fact that he stands upright, walks & talks and wears clothing is why you're claiming Goofy isn't really a dog, then he's no less of a dog than Mickey is a mouse, Donald is a duck, Bugs is a bunny and so on, ad infinitum.

He's a cartoon character - he talks so he can have a personality and he's humanoid so children can relate to him. Just like any other animated animal that is given human characteristics to strengthen their character and appeal.

I don't know why people have always had trouble identifying Goofy as a dog. Probably because Pluto (an actual dog-type dog) is in the same main cast of characters, but they're not meant to be the same thing at all. Pluto is Mickey's domestic pet; a 'dumb animal'. Goofy is a humanoid character like the others, only his 'animal of original' is defintely a non-descript dog. Check any Disney site for the history to the character if you doubt me.

Here, I've even looked it up for you: Go here for the answer. (You may need to scroll down.)

Some have said Goofy is a horse, but that's utter rubbish. It just highlights those peoples' ignorance of Disney characters and history (I'm something of a trivia nut in this area, if you didn't realise by now). Horace Horsecollar is the horse character in Disney's stable (pun intended), and Clarabelle Cow is the cow character who is Horace's beau (for better or worse), and Minnie Mouse's best friend (along with Daisy Duck).

Goofy is, has always been, and always will be ... a dog.

Like I said; no debate.
